The Little Things That Make My Heart Smile

Oh, Lovelies!!

I just got home from a 3 day trip with my school choir, and I couldn't be happier to laze around in my bed while I write this blog post. We had an amazing time while on tour, although we didn't get much sleep for the past three days (I'm a complete mess without at least 6 hours of sleep every night). We sang a small program of songs for several high schools and community colleges in the San Antonio and Austin area. Here is a little list of my loves this week:


Seeing Wicked! We went to see Wicked last night at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. It was AMAZING!! I have seen it before when we were in London two years ago, but I loved it just as much here in Texas. 

Lunch and shopping dates with my sis! I have always had the best time hanging out with my sis. She is the one person in my life who can convince me to buy something that I'm really lusting after but I don't necessarily need. I think everyone needs someone special to go shopping with like her.  

My new domain name: www.aquirkygirl.com!! I'm so excited about it!! I've been wanting a domain name for years, but I never really had any use for one until I started blogging. 

Having three days away from school, stress, rehearsal and homework! I really needed a respite from all the chaos and business. It was so lovely to spend time with my friends while on choir tour and not have a million things to worry about.

I'm an extremely visual person and it reflects in the things that inspire me. I received a blog comment a while back that mentioned that my blog was very image heavy. I suppose some people find a great deal of images a little annoying, but I absolutely love them. I love seeing them on the blogs I read daily and I like sharing inspiring images or images which correlate with my blog posts. Photo Fun!


Oh, Lovelies!! This week has been NUTS!!! I've been going non-stop since Monday morning without much sleep. I've been in and out of class, attending meetings, planning parties, working on research, doing homework, attending musical rehearsal, and doing about a million other little things. I bought some cute false eyelashes to wear tomorrow to distract the eye away from my dark under-eye circles. I managed to snap a few photos to document my week. Here is my week in photos:

Zeth brought me these absolutely gorgeous flowers on Valentine's Day! 

Apollo has been dying for attention all week. He is constantly jumping into my lap while I'm working because he wants to be held. So spoiled.

10 Ways to Cope With a Depressed Mood

Depression is one of those really confusing and frustrating emotions that we all deal with. Some of us are better at coping than others. Honestly Lovelies, I struggle with my fair share of depression. I've always been a fairly sensitive person and have struggled with bouts of unexplainable sadness. Mix that in with the pressures and struggles of being a girl in our society and one has a seemingly impossible problem with depression.  I think that everyone is different and deals with things in their own way, so it might seem like no one understands what you going through. Please know that if you struggle with any type of depression, you are not struggling alone. I think that feeling of aloneness is the worst part of depression. 

** I received a very rude comment today in regard to this post. I would just like to clarify that these tips are just my personal suggestions for a depressed mood. I am not claiming to have knowledge about clinical depression nor am I saying that these tips will help treat clinical depression. 

Also, if you have any constructive criticism in which you feel compelled to share in a comment, please be polite. I don't handle negative criticism very well as it is, and it is my desire to keep any negative energy off my personal blog. All rude comments will not be posted. If these rude comments persist, I will be forced to turn off my comments (which I would really hate to do because I love hearing from all of you lovelies). To all of you who have been supportive and helpful, thank you. I appreciate you more than you know.

Here are some of my own personal ways to deal with depression:

10 Ways to Cope With a Depressed Mood

★ Write down how you are feeling. There are many different ways to express your feelings through pen and paper. You can write a letter to yourself or to someone who may have caused your depression. You can vent to an unbiased ear about all the things that you are dealing with and how they make you feel. You can sketch out doodles of your thoughts. Or you can just scribble on the pages. Scribbling can be extremely therapeutic.

★  Be sure that you are tending to your basic needs. Are you getting enough sleep at night? Are you eating a well-balanced diet? Are you getting enough sunlight every day? Are you eating often enough? Are you taking any medicine that you may be prescribed? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself every day. You have to be responsible for your personal needs and take care of yourself in accordance with those specific needs. You deserve to have all of your basic needs met. If you are having trouble caring for yourself, ask someone close to you for help.

Put on your favorite music. One of my coping mechanisms is to put on my headphones, tune out the world, and listen to my favorite songs on my iPod. Make a playlist specifically for a crummy day and include all of the songs you're really into at the moment. Or include sad songs that make you feel, cry, and think. Sometimes that helps too.

Get physical. Get your heart pumping. Go for a jog or hit the gym for a little while. There is a simple therapy in physical activity. Plus working out releases endorphins which will help your mood. I often go for a long walk or jog when I'm feeling down. It also frees your mind for some deep thinking. 

★ Tend to your basic senses. Take an extra long bath or shower. Use aromatherapy candles, lotion, or bath salts. Ask someone close to give you a massage or get a professional massage if that is an option for you. Get a pedicure. Enjoy a bowl of your favorite soup. Go to your local coffee shop and enjoy the smells. Rent some movies and spend some time just relaxing on your couch while you watch them. Have a tickle fight with someone who makes you smile.



★ Talk to someone about what is bothering you. Even if you just cry a little bit, it will make you feel better to have someone to talk to. Just be careful who you confide in and make sure that they will respect your confidence. Sometimes I even vent to my dog. He just tilts his head at me, but he is a pretty good listener.


★ Distract yourself. Watch your favorite movie or television show. Bake some cookies. Visit a local park and swing on the swingset. Color or doodle. Build a house of cards (or at least try to). Read a book you've been meaning to get to. Clean up your room or wash up the dishes. Grab your camera and take lots of random pictures. Organize your closet or clear out your desk.


Do something nice for yourself. Grab a pint of your favorite ice cream (ice cream has magical depression-quelling powers). Buy yourself a new outfit or a new pair of shoes. Take a extra long nap. Write yourself a letter and describe all the lovely things about yourself. Take a lovely bubble bath.


★ Indulge in your favorite comfort food. I am not promoting emotional-eating, but there is nothing wrong with indulging in some comfort food occasionally when situations in life seem overwhelming. I'm definitely a pasta girl. Bring on the macaroni elbows, fettuccine, or farfalle!! Yum!


Listen to yourself. You know what is best for yourself better than anyone in the world. If you need some time to rest or be alone, do it. It's so easy to get wrapped up in your life, the needs of others, and all the expectations that people have of you. When you aren't feeling %100, you need to disregard the world and do what is best for yourself. You need to be patient and loving to yourself.

Happy Lovey Dovey Day!

I'm bursting with excitement because today is my favorite holiday ever!!
I think that today should be all about love; love for everyone in your life and love for yourself!

I know that a lot of people find Valentine's Day to be commercialized and tacky, but I have always loved everything about the holiday. I think that it's a wonderful way to honor St. Valentine who, according to legend, was tortured and put to death because he believed in love and performed marriages against the wishes of his emperor. I have a hard time finding fault with a holiday dedicated to love.


I think one of my favorite memories of Valentine's day is passing out little cards to all of my friends. I found some really cute Valentine's cards that I thought you might like.

Weekend Loveliness Tips

The weekend is my favorite time of the week!! I absolutely adore having a little time to myself to relax and enjoy myself. I think that everyone should be required to spend a little bit of their weekend doing things that make them incandescently happy. 

Weekend Loveliness Tips:

♥ Document your entire weekend in photos or a video. Go on a fun adventure with your friends and bring your camera along. Take lots of silly pictures. 

♥ Have a beauty blowout! Paint your nails in your favorite color of glitter polish. Practice your fishtail or side braids. Give yourself a facial or use a exfoliating facial mask. Watch some YouTube videos and practice your smoky eye look. 

♥ Bake some cookies from scratch. Put on some lively music while your baking to ensure that your baked goods are infused with love and positivity. Package up your goodies in some colorful cellophane and give them out to your friends. 

♥ Put on your Netflix or DVR and veg out for a little while. It's nice to take a break from thinking for a short time after a stressful week.

♥ Go for a drive around your city. Explore streets that you've never been down before. Enjoy your mini-adventure.


♥ Pull out your journal (that you may have neglected for quite some time) and spend some time writing out your thoughts and feelings. Perhaps you could make a little list of reason why you love yourself or a list of things that you are thankful for.

♥ Have a cleaning spree and clean your home from top to bottom like a whirlwind of cleanliness! Put on your favorite movie or some happy music. Cleaning is a wonderful stress reliever. It's also been proven that people are happier when their personal space is clean and organized. 

♥ Go out with some friends to a local cafe and sip on a delicious cup of chai tea during your deep conversations.

♥ Make some chicken soup for someone in your life who has been sick. Make sure to bring a long a package of oyster crackers. They are the best snack on a sick day.

♥ Watch Marie Antoinette and then recreate her look with bows, lace, curls, and fancy jewelry (I actually have a Marie Antoinette costume from a few Halloweens ago).
